Yesterday my daughter was awarded a fellowship and grant award from the United States Artists Foundation. It was a gala affair for a fabulous award. I am very proud.

Warm wool scarves

I should be posting all of my lastest work. But it takes time.

At Delectable Mountain in Brattleboro, VT, I found some yummy light weight wool for scarves. The wool is just delightful. The scarves are generous enough to be a shawl. I have done some pole wrapping and other shibori resists. Today, I just did a gradation of color (see the left side).

Fiber Twist in Deerfield, MA

Save the date! Fiber Twist http://www.fibertwise.com is coming on September 17 in the building next to the large Yankee Candle store in Deerfield, MA on Route 5/10. It is an all day event. There is a lot of rug hooking, yarn, fiber art, etc.

Yes, I am exhibiting there. I have been very busy creating some new silk scarves, fat quarters and sewing kits to sell there. My Walpole Artisans buddy is making me a new display, too.

I hope to see you there.

Macdowell Medal Day

Right here in Southern New Hampshire is the Macdowell Colony, an artist residency.
Once a year, they open their grounds and studios to the public for Macdowell Medal Day. This year, the medal was presented to playwright Edward Albee. Even thought it was a little rainy, the visit was worth the trip.

The gardens are well kept by their groundskeeper, Emily. I met Emily recently when we had a little lunch together. She lives in Harrisville. She does a great job!

The studios are also well kept. Each has its own sleeping quarters and a bathroom. Each has 4 white walls, a fireplace, etc. The musicians often have their own piano for their residency. Seeing the art, hearing the music, watching the movies; it was all so special and inspiring.

Here, below is the Colony library. Lots of videos and books in a beautiful stone building. The stone building above is the "Alexander" visual art studio. Each studio was unique.

While I often think I live in God's Country, this type of artistic venue makes New Hampshire very special.

A visit to Pennsylvania

Since I have a new life with 4 day week-ends, not by choice, for sure, I thought I should head south and check in on the elderly folks.

They live in Lancaster, PA. But what to do to have some fun on the way?

Check out Goggleworks in Reading, PA.

Goggleworks is an old factory which made glass lenses and goggles. There are 6 buildings of art. One is a glass hot shop; one is ceramics, one is a theatre of sorts, lots of parking, interesting art a facts in downtown Reading now. Goggleworks is a lovely facility of 60-80 art studios, mostly painters. There is a fine craft gallery, too. What a gem!

The only bad thing today was the heat! My car thermometer said it was 102 o F until I arrived in Lancaster at 1pm. Tonight it is still 90 oF. Enough already.

Yes, there are classes. I plan to inquire about their artists in residence program. What a great use of a government grant. And Reading is now a thriving city!

Many changes happening

We moved, in April, to a new/old house on School St in Keene. The house was built in 1827 and has a historical story, according to the newspaper. The builder owned the Keene Sentinel, the local newspaper.

We are still adapting as lots of work has to be done. The second floor will be my art studio. The second floor is a mess with boxes. Soon after we moved we went abroad on vacation. More about that coming soon.

But living in downtown Keene is terrific. We walk everywhere. Our green footprint is growing. When we lived in Winchester, we put about $80.00 a week into our gas tank. That is one month's budget now! One car will go soon.

The end of a snowy winter

What does one do when it snows and snows and snows? We had a whole years' of snow in two months this year. And this week-end we were blitzed again. The Snow thrower broke! No time to clean up so hire someone and run into the studio.

AHHH...it was a wonderful week-end. I created some baby clothes to sell at the Walpole Artisan Cooperative in Walpole, NH.

And while I was at it, I did two little jackets for Rachel and Maria. Those twins are so cute. Counting the days til I see them in April!

Twined knitting

Although I am doing two art journals, filled with family art memobalia I found the time on Saturday to take a class on Twined knitting. Taught by Beth Reinsel-Brown, one could not ask for more information. We saw photos of the old Swedish knitting and samples Beth brought to us. One interesting piece showed a sweater with the knitted sleeves sewn into an embroidered garment - all done by an expert tailor. It was amazing.

The class was at Knit or Dye www.knitordye.com in Brattleboro., VT, a lovely shop on Main St.

Brattleboro is a lovely town. Think shop small - lots of fun shops, a good bakery, restaurants, the Brattleboro Food Coop.

Artist Cards

Its a new year and time to do some new things. I did just that. I created more than 10 artist cards. They are so carefree and fun. Easy to make, easy to give.

Having a Pfaff embellisher really makes my life a pleasure. I don't know how I lived without it! I know it is hard to see in this textile postcard. However, I put various painted fabrics onto an iron on pellon, then put down some wool with cut up angelina. Over that, I put an odd shape scrap of nylon netting. Under the embellisher it went to keep it in tack. Works like a charm. So easy, quick and fun.

Recycled clothing!

What does one do when you own more than 100 t shirts and most have never been worn? Recycle them. In the thrift shops they sell them for rags.

I cut them up and did some artistic dyeing. Each pant front is the back of a shirt and each pants back is the back of a shirt! Whip out that serger and in 20 minutes, the pants are done.

I also use these for mono printing transparent fabric. Two for the price of one. These green pants were the fabric which took the excess of the mono print and then I threw them in a dye bath.

My twin granddaughters are the recipient of these pants! The little tucks near the hem are for the growth extensions!

Finishing the Katazome class

Katazome - first day

Today we cooked some rice paste and used a paper stencil to stencil the fabric. I did a piece of heavy silk, supposedly Vera Wang but who really knows. After the rice paste was applied, the fabric is stretch and hung out to dry. That is what you are seeing here. Akemi showed me photos of her home, the traditional Japanese screens and a shroud she made for her mom's burial. It brought back memories of my love affair of Japan.

Akemi Cohn is a very nice and thorough teacher. She is organized well and really knows her stuff.

I have a learning curve with natural dyes. Where oh where are those chemistry classes from high school? Long time ago, for sure. Now I am on to a new adventure.

My process is that I cut my own canvas, prepare the canvas for the floorcloth, handpaint each piece individually without any patterns. Upon completion, I use a special floor covering varnish which lasts 10-12 years with just a wet wipe - nothing harsh.The floorcloth is stain-resistant, durable and great for any room - especially a hard surfaced floor.I am selling my floorcloths at close out prices because I am closing them out. No special orders, please. Final sales. I have more than twenty years of painted floorcloth experience in the arts. I know how well these are made and how long they will last.

Garbage Journals!

Ever hear about a garbarge journal! This is it! Art Studio garbage is what the journal has.

Each page is a piece of art. No real theme - Just 8 pages and 8 paper pages for journaling!

This is the front cover. Created by Beth Lipman, my daughter, in college in the early 1990's. The others are my creations - dyed fabrics, an old Needlepoint, paper cloth collages, etc. The cocoa pod is from that delicious chocolate, Burdicks' in Walpole, NH.

This is the perfect thing to create when Life gives you lemonade and any thing you do is Dark. This allowed me to feel better during a difficult time in my life. And I have used some lemons!

Text on the Surface

I have been a guinea pig for a pilot project Susie Monday is doing. She accepted the SAQA (www.Saqa.com) challenge for a visioning project.

Poor dear, her computer crashed, she had other emergencies but the 20 or so of us are trying to carry on. Here is a collage using paper cloth

and words - one of our test projects. It was a coincidence that my paper cloth was already done. The S letters on the left were part of Lesson 1, using letters to create a composition. I used a transfer method to create those letter in this collage.

I like the paper cloth idea and will definitely do more of it.

Introduction to Katazome

Karen Miller (http://nautilus-fiberarts.blogspot.com/) is traveling across the country this summer.

She and her husband will travel by car/truck and a motor home stopping in various places to teach "the Art of Katazome", the art of Japanese Stencil Dyeing. Fiber Art at its best!

We are fortunate to have Karen coming to Keene, NH to do a workshop here on July 17 and 18, 2010. A two day workshop in our backyard. And Karen isn't charging us for her travel time! Therefore, the cost to us has been reduced to only $300.00 per person for the two days.

Sunday in MA

It was predicted to be a rainy day, yesterday. But only a drop fell on us.

I met my brother in Cambridge to spend a few hours together. It was a wonderful afternoon. Too bad we live so far apart.

We started the MIT press bookstore. http://web.mit.edu/bookstore/www/ It took us an hour to browse through all the indie press titles. That bookstore is a wonderful resource. The art selection is not the ordinary. One book, about Crochet, was crochet shown and created using math configurations. Thus, MIT's interest!

I bought Inspiring Writing in Art and Design: Taking a line for a while by Pat Francis. This fit right in with my current classwork by Susie Monday: Text on the Surface. http://www.susiemonday.com/ I am one of her test pilots and the class is motivating me to create more art.

Back to yesterday: Following the hour of browsing through all the terrific books. We lunched at Legal Sea Foods in Kendall Square. www.legalseafoods.com Umm, the Asian Vegetables with Scallops were delicious.

Two very full people decided to walk. And we did. Around MIT and across the Harvard Bridge to Boston. Along the Charles River : things were so beautiful and in bloom. Then across the crumbling Longfellow Bridge to Kendall Square. - 1 1/2 hours! It seems everyone was jogging or sailing or walking.

Rick, my brother went on to fly to Germany to work in Europe for the week. I drove home and two hours later it rained! What luck.

HELP! Seeking advice for the UFO

Several years ago I took a fair isle class from what was then the Webs’ Master Knitting program. They had personnel issues and the program changed. To make this short, I did not continue with the program. I had started this fair isle sweater during the Master Knitting Class and the new program leader washed her hands of helping the previous customers. Thus, I am left in a lurch with a sweater I am trying to complete.

Here is my dilemma. I created the body of the fair isle sweater using Knitting the Old Way by Priscilla Roberts-Gibson. I never bound off the shoulders and instead went to my LYS, which has since closed, to try to learn how to finish this sweater. She had me steek the front and put the front bands on. Before I got that done, she closed her shop. (Sounds like a bad luck story here!)

Now, the sleeves are knitted. I want to finish the sweater and I can figure out the neck band but I have all the stitches on the needle – neck and shoulders, etc.

Shall I bind off doing a three needle bind off for the shoulders now or knit some more? And shape the shoulders? Or shall I count off the neckline stitches and create it, after which I can do the bind off for the shoulders.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Hiking Mt. Wantastisquet

Last week I took a break from doing my ebay sales to take a hike mup Mt. Wantastisquet. Not far up the trail, I found this A frame house. Is it for people or deer?

Who knows. It does offer some snow protection.

Then I kept hearing a hammering noise. Not many people were out and I couldn't understand who would be hammering. About 100 yards futher into the trail, I saw a beautiful woodpecker with the longest beak, ever! Despite my attempts, I could not capture him in a photographer. He was really putting a hole in the top of this tree! That beak created the hammering noise.

Today, it is sooooo cold outside that working on ebay sales is just the thing to do.

Yesterday I finished the birthday cards for the 1 year old twins who are in Tacoma, Washington with their folks until Thursday. Beth, their mom, is working at the Museum of Glass Art Studio for an artist residency. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2INvZWb9a-4

The Holidays are over!

After a nice calm Christmas, we went to WI to see our daughter and exchange a few gifts.

Knowing my affection for all things heritage, I received this box of notecards. The Museum of the City of New York hosts my cousin, Sam Gottscho's photography. He worked the the New York Times as a photographer.

Our flight went well. Air Tran was a goood airline and because they aren't a biggie, for once, the TSA was kind to me. WI is very cold. Glad to be home, even if it is snowing now.

NH Wool Arts Tour, ETC

Saturday was a beautiful day. The sky was alive with dark and white puffy clouds with the sun behind it. Occassionally it rained, no big deal.

I went for a new adventure. I decided to try a different route to Washington, NH. Washington is near President Franklin Pierce's home. Route 10 north is a ho hum ride but took a ride in Lempster and there I was, literally, at the base of a windmill. The windmill looks small from Route 10 but this is a huge piece of equipment, making electricity for some business. That windmill against the fall foliage was a sight to see.

From there, I landed in Washington at one of the stops on the NH Wool Arts Tour. Nice lady from Newport has her own dyed shetland type yarn for a 1.00 an ounce. Just couldn't plan then so she is a future trip! But I found two cute pairs of infant mittens for my twin GD. Can't beat the price of $6.00 each. Lunch of a Lamburger by the local historial society is always a treat.

Next stop was Deering. My first trip to Deering. Darling town. The Spinner Farm was fabulous and the scenery was breathtaking. Large barn with lots of horses and sheep and..... Open for stroking! Found a hank of fabulous rabbit angora merino mix. And the local alpaca farm was there. There yarn is yummy but that can be a local visit. Found a shop from Manchester selling Kauni. I had read a lot about it but now I can try it for a little should shawl. Oh, please give me time!

Then on to the Fiber Studio in Henniker, NH.

Henniker is a gem! Fabulous quilt shop: Quilted Threads, great restaurant: Daniels. A local college and fabulous scenery.

Fiber Studio has new owners and lots of stock. I met up with friends from the Granite State Knitters Group doing a demo.

From Henniker, I went to Concord where I got a great deal on tires for my car. Good bargains from the Land's End store.

Very productive and fun day!

Green Trees Gallery

Saturday was the opening for a small exhibit about the Connecticut River Gallery at the Green Trees Gallery in Northfield, MA. I had two pieces of textile art with manipulated photos of scenes from Mt. Sugarloaf in Deerfield, MA and atop Little Monadnock in Fitzwilliam, NH. Both are favorite hiking spots!

This was a great Labor Day week-end as the weather was terrific. I had time for one last swim in Forest Lake. We stacked 150 bags of pellets - yes, I am ready for winter.

New kitchen window! Life is ok, now. I even had time to do some art! Alright!

Rachel's Quilt and Sweater

Finally, I finished one baby sweater and pantaloons for Rachel. Maria's is done but not assembled. These took forever! Knitting for twins is tedious! I am going to see the twins on Thursday and will also take Rachel's quilt with me. Maria's quilt isn't finished yet. This photo doesn't do it justice. Moses Quilt Shop did the quilting and the binding and they did a fabulous job.

I love creating this fabric for the quilt. This is my heirloom to these children.

Now on to my Berroco contest piece. It is coming along nicely. I will post it before I mail it later in August.

Walking up Fifth Ave in NYC, I had to notice the Bergdorf Goodman windows. Window shopping at its finest. This is the sort of creativity I admire. Sort of reminded me of Barney's in December! These windows were in support of the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD. Eash fashion designer had a special mannequin for a special garment. Perhaps they were for sale? Another project runway idea? Don't know but I did enjoy it.

Felt and Kaleidscope Quilts

Sorry - I am no damn good at getting photos in any order! Read below! Here at the top are two close ups of parts of the Yirt. I had to get "friendly" with the guard to achieve this!

All of the hype made me go! I took a Kuz Travel Trip to NYC to see the Felt exhibit at the Cooper Hewitt Museum. Run, do not stop - it is soooooo good.

The Yirt is most interesting. The wool is felted with several different fabrics: thus each panel is different. Here is a felt wall trim, a couple of fashion items, a chair and some yirt close ups.

One European artist statement stated she is not a fashion artist because her felt jacket has no seams!

Following that inspiration, a visit to the Apple Store - a sight to behold- I landed at the Museum of American Folk art to see the Kaleidscope Quilt exhibit. Paula Naderstern created these quilts at her kitchen table in a 2 bedroom apt in NYC (who needs a studio?).

Finally - the Sun!

After weeks of unrelenting rain, the sun shone for three glorious days. First, two hours of swimming and relaxing at our local Forest Lake to start our holiday week-end. Then off to Northampton, MASS (see left). There was a hula hoop party at Town Hall! We visited New Century Theatre to see Other Peoples Money which was an excellent comedy.

Whirlwind week-end trip to MI

We left for Chicago Midway airport on Friday, the 5th of June with our ultimate destination as Kalamazoo, MI for a wedding. Upon arrival in Chicago we drove to WI to see our daughter and the new babies. So cute!

Saturday we drove to Kalamazoo for the wedding. My cousin, Daniel Eichinger married Katie Bentz. My "baby" brother was there - see him on the left - he thought wearing our niece's teddy bear to impress her, Kaylee, was cute! What do you think? You wouldn't guess that he is an Executive Vice President of a business in Silicon Valley, CA!

Niece Kaylee was at the wedding. She has beautiful eyes and a kalik like her father!

She was not impressed by her Uncle with the teddy bear on his head! Here is a distance shot of the couple taking their vows.

Tomorrow we are going to Chicago for a quickie visit to Sheboygan WI where we will see our granddaughter twins agains. Here is Maria with Beth - I think they look alike. She looks like Beth at 2 months.

Saturday we are driving to Kalamazoo, MI for a wedding, the son of my cousin, Judy.

Weather is so nice I would love to be on the lake in my kayak - next week maybe!

Surface Design Member Show

Last week at the Surface Design conference, Off the Grid, in Kansas City, MO there were many great activities and so little time. I stole a few hours to attend the Member show at the Belger Gallery. Kick me for not submitting a piece. Here are a few pieces and my photography does not do them justice.

The most inspiring lecture was by Ray Materson. A jailbird who created miniature embroideries in jail and made it big time. His book, Sins and Needles, is terrific. It just proves that anyone can succeed when we apply the energy correctly.

We all have those UFO's. Unfinished Objects. I have been on a path to complete them. My latest is an orgami quilt square I started in a class a year ago when I took a class with Jennie Rayment.

This is a combination of my painted fabric and store bought fabric.

Now I am on the hunt for a coordinating batik which is very subtle and it is quicker to buy it. Next up, this will be a tote bag by week's end. In the interim I need to finish part one of my CYCA Crochet class. Hooray, things are happening.

Thread Painting!

Yes! It was a great artsy week-end. I did some new deconstructed printing and tried it on some t shirts for the first time. That was more difficult but I can make it beautiful, none the less.

After seeing a video and reading Terry White's book on Thread painting, I tried my hand at it. Yes, it was stressful but after 30 minutes I was so into it and relaxed. Look at this little thing!

I can't wait to try more.

This is a good way to use up those old Coats and Clarks threads, learn more about threads and buy more~superior threads.com here I come!

Creative Spurts

Wonder why I haven't been posting? For one thing, I have been creating for the newest family members - my twin granddaughters. Here is sweater no 1. No 2 is still being knitted!

I bought two books of French baby knitted designs from a lovely shop on Madison Ave last October. Everything in those books is terrific but there isn't enough time. Unfortunately, this photo could have better colors as the orange is nice soft peach which accents the sweater.

I will see these babies for the first time on April 8 so I need to finish the second sweater this week. Bye bye for now!

Deconstructed Screen Painting

Finally, back to the studio! I spent last week- a few minutes here and there, preparing to do some deconstructed screen printing. Except for one piece, I love all the results.

Fair Isle Handbag

My oh my, it feels good to finish a UFO! Here is my Fair Isle handbag. This was a KAL on the yahoo traditional knitting list. Liz Lovick created the Fair Isle pattern in a sport or fingering weight yarn. But this yarn is grown and spun right here in Cheshire County so I had to use it. And I didn't want a hat, I wanted a handbag. Thank you Liz for the inspiration and design.

Creating this was a good finishing lesson for me. I did icord bind off and finishing for the first time. Lovely and fun! Then I had to cast on stitches on the bottom to do an I cord seam - live and learn, I should have done that cast on with waste yarn - life would have been simpler.

I designed the front flap- nothing special - used my painted fabric that I planned to discard for the lining. Other things I planned and did were I reinforced the button hole with the blanket stitch. I purchased the handles and never before machine sewn those but I think, since there are no knitting police, this turned ok.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Christmas Day we left Logan Airport in Boston for Ocho Rios, Jamaica. This was our first trip to the Carribean. Learning about new cultures, food and having total relaxation was the reason for the vacation. It was an education. But the good food: Indian cuisine, Jamaican jerk chicken with some delicious rum drinks - oh my! And to sit on the beach and look at the beautiful water! Just a treat.

The houses all have wrought iron grilles. Some of the architectural details are very interesting. Their so called arts and crafts are all Indonsian imports. Didn't need to spend money there.

The gardens are fabulous. Their gardens are filled with our house plants (or maybe the other way around!)

Came home New Year's Eve to a snowstorm. No Problem, as they say in Jamaica!

New England Weather

As most people know, 9 days ago we had a horrific ice storm. Almost a million people lost power.

In the Monadnock Region, there are still more than 20,000 people without power. So many folks tell me how they are getting through it: wood stoves, cooking on the grill, using generators which are not such a hot commodity that they are being stolen, etc. Check it out at http://www.wmur.com/.

This photo is atop Manning Hill in Winchester, NH where the houses around it had no power until today. Fortunately, I was not directly affected.

To add insult to injury, we had 12 inches of snow in the last twenty four hours. It is still snowing. Another 18" is on its way. Thankfully we are going to Jamaica on Thursday morning!

This was a terrific day to finish my loose ends. I am swapping cards which have some thread painting through the Thread Society elist. Perfect opportunity to test my skills. I really loved this card. I freehanded on the machine the word Peace which is hard to read but it is there!

The process I used was needlefelting yarns both by hand and on the machine. I did my thread painting, added some beads, etc.

Here is the result.

Next: The card to the right is a little quote about taking some time to enjoy the tea, live life now, etc. This is for my special friend in Delaware. And here is another I did using my canvas, old sewing patterns, scraps of painted fabrics, metal wrapping paper and paint.

And so all my gifts are done. Now to pack for our trip! That is of course, in between, snow blower and shoveling time tomorrow. Sure wish I had time to snowshoe!

Fuller Craft Museum

Last Saturday I took my friend Janet to the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA. She is a crochet artist extraordinaire.

The gateway to the actual museum is lovely. Even in the brown mud season of this month!

We both wanted to see the Crocheted Prayer rugs by Xeonibia Bailey. Three exhibits were breathtaking.

This is Janet creating a crochet Mandela to add to the crochet exhibit.

The teapot exhibit was fabulous. My friend, Irene Reed, created two of the teapots in this exhibit.

After we visited the exhibits we shopped the Wearable Art Sale. Such gorgeous and reasonably priced things. It was a very inspiring visit.

Following our museum tour, we ate lunch at the "Not our Usual Joes". Then on to Boston.

Our destination was the Fort Point Arts Center. After riding around South Boston and within 1 mile of the same area for an hour looking for it- yes, we asked three cops and no one knew where it was - we parked the car.

The Children's Museum was very busy. We checked out the recycle shop. No great finds that day. Headed off to Trader Joe's and home. It was a very fun day.

Fair Isle KAL

Very often I do not have the time to follow a Knit-A-Long (KAL) with an e group but Elizabeth Lovick is a such a master of stranded knitting that I had to join her group.

Traditional knitting has an egroup which Elizabeth feeds us with her creativity. I chose to use worsted weight yarns – some from locally raised sheep – to follow the pattern that Elizabeth posted. Thus far, this is my creation and I think it will make a wonderful purse.

Of course I will post a photo when it is complete.

Witch's Tea

Sunday, the 26th October, 2008, my friend Charri Hendricksen invited me to a Witch's Tea.

Teaching Textile Arts for a local Quilt Guild

Textile Arts is my passion. Can't you tell? On October 19 I had 10 marvelous students of the Cheshire Quilt Guild learn about dyeing and printing fabric, without a washing machine!

Look at these beautiful results. Printing, stamping, monoprinting, sun resist dyeing. Nancy Whitney created these fabrics for quilted and she claims to be not creative!

NYC - Madison Avenue

Everyone should spend a day in the Big Apple as a reality check. Do I live as a New Yorker? Sometimes! I am after all a native!

But a long walk on Madison Ave is so much fun. The New York socialites dress to out do one another. Most people wear black. But the highest fashions and most expensive everything is on Madison Avenue. Here are two photos of the scarves in Searle. Note that the scarves are either knitted or shibori - design wise, right up my alley!

After a delicious salmon salad at the Nector Cafe - which set me back about $30.00, I spent an hour at Annie and Co knitting store. There I found a fabulous selection of knitting books.

Yes, I bought two with kids patterns. Afterall, I am the expectant grandmother of twins!

Lastly I went to the Whitney Museum of Art. Crowded!!! My peaceful life in NH has eased me into liking no crowds. The Alexander Calder exhibit was terrific.

It was a long day but very invigorating. I am looking forward to my next trip!

NY Sheep and Wool Festival

Economy in the tank? Hardly! On the 18th October I took a bus trip to the NY Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY. I have never seen so many people on a buying frenzy. The lines for shopping, eating, driving, etc were never ending.

It was a great way for me to save money because I could not get into the booths to buy anything.

I so much wanted a philosopher's wool sweater kit. But I couldn't get waited upon. Therefore, I will work on my stash. The best thing was a sign which said that Yarn Stock never crashes!

Beth Lipman at the RSID Museum of Art

Upon walking along Benefit Street in Providence, RI, we tripped upon the RSID Museum of Art. It was our actual destination to see Beth's art. Providence, RI

We are home after a whirlwind three days in Providence, RI. What a fabulous artsy city. We had two days of rain which dampened our activities a bit. Less walking and more driving, that sort of thing.

Providence was settled by Roger Williams in the early colonial days. Many statues and tributes to that fine ole chap! There is a canal (with lots of fish) through the city. Many times there are firelight exhibits there but the rain caused the cancellation of that activity for the time we were there.

Above is the exterior of a potter's studio. The non black areas of the exterior are clay.

Providence has many similarities to Philadelphia: brick and stone streets, old but charming houses on the historical register, narrow streets, few steep hills, vibrant arts community, good restaurants, etc.

This house is on Benefit Street. Many homes there have historical markers dating the home.

One evening we ate at Constantino's

in the Federal Hill part of the city. Also known as Little Italy.

Mancuso Quilt Show, Manchester, NH

I spent most of the day in a class with Jennie Rayment learning her origami style of folded fabric pieces.

Portuguese Knitting

One would never have believed that Portugese Knitting could be so much fun and so quick: both to learn and to knit.

Friday night, Andrea Wong, who was visiting Harrisville, NH drove to Keene to teach of bunch of fiber enthusiasts this new technique. It was love at first, for all of us.

Andrea, who is dressed in black, is an excellent teacher. Her knitting history is also wonderful. Check her out at www.andreawong.com.

Lake Sunapee, NH

Last week-end my folks drove up from Lancaster, Pennslvania. Imagine being almost 90, buying a new car and driving to Southern NH. On top of that, they are going to WI in November.

We trekked north to tour Lake Sunapee by boat, after stopped at the Badger Balm tent sale.
(http://www.badgerbalm.com/). Lots of bargains for holiday gifts: Anti-bug balm, foot balm, hand creams, etc.

Arriving at the shore of Lake Sunapee, we had a delightful picnic. All the goodies from the Brattleboro, VT Farmers Market: VT cheese and bread, Gourd cherries, fresh picked cherry tomatoes, etc. Here are my folks sitting near a Gazebo on the hill overlooking Sunapee Harbor.

At 2:30 we boarded the MV Sunapee and road along the harbor and lake. The lake is 25 square miles; one of the few naturally fed spring water lakes with such clear, clean water; 140 deep in place; three public beaches, several boat clubs; interesting beautiful houses, three lighthouse, etc. The sun peaked through the cloud just for us.

Quilt U class

One way I have discovered to make more time for art is to take online classes. Quilt U has a wonderful selection and keeps me going. Here is a beginner dye class with Marjie McWilliams.

The first class was to vat dye 3 fat quarters. But I just can't follow directions! Here is a "vat" dyed pied which came out with lots of texture. It is a really deep "stormy blue" using Procion MX Dyes - what a joke. It is perfect for discharge! Stay tuned.

These are two more pieces which I just overdyed. The first was silkscreened before it was dyed. It too will be discharged, batiked and more. The lower one was dyed orange, discharged and overdyed. It is more more to my liking but it too needs more play.

Just from the first two lessons, where I only learned a thing or two, I created 12 fat quarters of fabric. The class is doing its job - forcing me to get into the studio! Hooray!

Surface Design Association Auction

The coast of Maine

Lobster and more Lobster! Perfect weather! Wonderful fibers! It all came together during our short vacation to coastal Maine.

I taught Art Cloth at the fiber college in Searsport, Maine on Friday, the 5th September. Such a lovely campground. Right on the Penosbscot Bay in Mid Coast. The fog rolls in and out. The oil tankers come and go. (The bench and woods are on the coast at the Searsport Campground.)

But the water is sooooooooo beautiful. Lots of sailboats, fisherman, interesting rocks, birds, etc.

Coastal Maine is always lovely. Here is a photo of Young's Lobster Pound from the harbor at Belfast, Maine. Belfast was an old mill town but is now filled with art galleries and artsy shops, good restaurants, etc. At Youngs', we ate a full Lobster Bake and it was fabulous. While we were there, several thousand pounds of lobster were loaded onto a truck bound for Canada to be processed for the lobster meat and sold off from there.

Coming home, the pancakes at Moody's Diner were terrific.

We stopped in Freeport to see if there any irresistible specials at LL Bean. Wow - that town has boomed in the last 15 years.

I found a winter parka for 30.00!

On to Portland. At the port, the best New England Chowder in America is at Gilbert's. They didn't let us down. We shopped for more lobster at the port, drove to York Harbor for a walk and came home. Hurricane Hanna was kind to us - she came through at night - we had perfect weather and a good time.

Fiber Art College

Northeast Kingdom, Vermont

Last week-end I went to the Northeast Kingdom, Vermont with a friend to her summer house. It was in lovely Greensboro, Vermont, the home of Caspian Lake. I dreamt of kayaking and swimming but only did each once as the rain never stopped.

Here is the view from the Lake as we kayaked at 8 am before the rain, under dark skies.

Under the water, it is very possible to see a lot of the glacier rock which is the "cause" of Caspian Lake. The lake is 1.5 miles long and 150 deep in the center. This yellow cottage is known as a camp in New England.

This is one of the two buildings which comprises my friend's summer home in Greensboro, VT. It is on a hill overlooking the lake but within walking distance of the lake. The views are fabulous.

This little shed and the second building of the summer home are also on the hill. See the mountain in the rear?

A relative, who was an architect, designed this home. Such a relaxing place as no phone, no tv!

We just drank wine, ate local cheeses and breads and read a book. What could be better!

Wild flowers

Earlier this week, I had to take a painting to UPS and on the way, the wild flowers caught my eye. Coming back, I stopped three times - and look at this beautiful bouquet of flowers! The lilies close at night and open during the day. This photo was taken at dusk in my dining room.

The fragrance is terrific.

We have had a rain shower or storm almost every day for a month. Lots of flowers, vegetables and wildlife to see.

I am doing a lot of knitting: socks, a sweater, another sweater! Last week I won a gift certificate to Not Just Yarn in Brattleboro, VT. Hooray!

But spring has finally come to New Hampshire. Kayaking on Forest Lake was delightful. The gardens and homes are terrific. Recently I spent three hours on the Connecticut River. The families of Canadian Geese were a sight to behold. (I longed for my camera!). Soon I will post photos of the kayaking trips!

Another snowy day!

We have had three snow storms in a week! And I live near MA so most of NH has had much more snow than us. We have had 100" of snow plus since December 1. Please, Spring, come soon. This is a 100 year record!

But the contrast of light/dark and brown/green and white is breathtaking. The mountains, especially in the sun's light, are truly alive! The scenery is magnificent. This majesty will be here while the temperature rises, hopefully soon.

Skiing is terrific. Snowshoeing is better. Last week I was on Pinnacle Trail in Fitzwilliam, NH.

The views were fabulous - literally a sight to behold as one could see 100 miles away.

UFO is all done!

Finally my Fair Isle socks are done. This is a kit from Red Bird Knits from the days when I belonged to the sock knitting club. I LOVE these!

No, these are not many skeins of yarn. Robin of Red Bird Knits has a very clever way of knitting fair isle socks. The colors are the self striping sock yarn and I just cut out the little pieces of yarn which had short color and white - by the inch. Therefore, I used a skein of white sock yarn and only the solid color part of the second skein.

Snow is forecasted for tomorrow so I will wear them for snowshoeing!

Art Cloth

Several years ago, when I decided to change my art focus, I took a class with Jane Dunnewold.

This year I spent a week with Rayna Gillman. Both are very talented, sharing and caring fiber artists. From their inspiration, I have fallen in love with making art cloth. Here is a photo of a just completed piece, a fat quarter, for sale.

The processes include dying, screenprinting, batik and more dyeing. Just love it. I only wish my photography would improve. I will be posting more photos of the art cloth in the future. In the meantime, feel free to send me an email if you wish to buy one. These are pieces of art for quilting, ATC's or anything you wish.

Cleaning out, de stashing, selling off!

Too much stuff in my barn. It is getting to me! Time to clean out and sell off this stuff.

I just listed a few things on ebay but I have lots and lots to do. Yarn, all new, from a smoke free home, for sweaters, hats, etc. Mostly wool but some silk too.
Cones of chenille yarn to dye. Ephemera! Antique doll carriage. Two sets of X-C skiis with the shoes (size 10 W and 9 M), Books, etc.

Knitting

Finally, some of my many knitting projects are on their way to completion. For several months I have done some artistic freeform knitting and crochet scarves which are on sale at the Cambridge Artists Coop, Cambridge, MA. Soon I can post photos of them.

But I did complete Selbhu mittens this week-end. The Frog Tree alpaca is sooo soft. Of course, I can't follow the directions precisely and if you look closely, the two mittens have some slight variations but that is my life! I love Fair Isle or stranded knitting. Soon I will post a pair of fair isle socks which I will never wear or they wear out!

Oh, by the way, I am teaching FreeForm knitting and Crochet at the Sharon Arts Center this fall. It is 5 consecutive Monday nights.

Hiking in New England

My favorite thing to do in the Fall is to hike the many trails or mountains of New England. The nights are cool, the days are warm, the sky is so blue, it is hard to resist!

Last week I hiked Mt. Sugarloaf in Deerfield, Mass. Look at the views of the Connecticut River!

Last year I climbed Little Monadnock in Fitzwilliam, long after most of the foliage was down. The contrast with the light and dark trees is remarkable.

Labor Day week-end

I flew to Chicago on September 1 to ride with my DD to NYC while she drove the truck with her art for her show opening on September 6.

We could write a book about eating breakfast at 11 PM each night or finding a hotel where the truck would be safe all night. And we always looked for the hotel at 1 am!

The highlight of the week-end was visiting an Art Gallery in Chagrin Falls, OH and eating at the Fish Market. The food was delicious.

I was very happy to see the Lincoln Tunnel on Labor Day! No Gridlock! Hurray!

Fiber Arts

In the next few weeks I will post photos of my latest venture into the fiber arts. I love to dye and print fabrics. I also love to knit, crochet and combine the arts. My favorite knitting is fair isle or stranded knitting.

But first, I must travel to Chicago to drive across the country to NYC with my daughter as she transports her work to her next show. And before it gets too cold, I need some more time to kayak a few more lakes in New Hampshire. There is nothing more peaceful than kayaking a fresh water lake among the mountains in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. Fall Foliage is also the perfect time to hike some of the smaller mountains and interesting trails.

Floorcloths

Floorcloths are what the Early American Folks used to protect their wooden floors. They didn't have the funds for carpet so they painted with milk or oil paints on the old fashion old cloths. Very few are in today's museums but President Andrew Jackson has one in his home.

Here are some photos of my floorcloths.

Today, I create floorcloths for customers who need to protect a wood or tile floor. Sometimes, folks just want a decorative mat. My floorcloths will outlast any commercial throw rug, if given proper care.

My process is to use a heavy cotton duck canvas, prime it and paint it. It is then protected with lots of coats of water based varnished made for heavy use.

I am the mother of Beth Lipman, the well known glass artist.

Beth graduated from Tyler School of Art with a art degree in both glass and fiber. She has truly made a mark for herself in the glass industry. She was Education Director at Urban Glass Studios in Brooklyn, NY. From there, she developed a glass studio for the Worcester Center of Crafts in MA, worked a the Wheaton Village Glass Center and is currently working at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, WI. All the while, Beth has secured grants and attended artists residencies to further her art career. She also teaches her art.

Recently, the Renwick Gallery in D.C. purchased the large table of glass. Tyler Schoool of Art is inducting Beth into the Gallery of Successful Graduates, an honor bestowed on two graduates per year.

Beth's next show opens September 6 at The Heller Gallery in New York City.

The meaning of Early Lipman Art

Having been an artist for all of my life and creating art to sell for more than 30 years, I am often seeing people who say: "I have an early Lipman piece of art.".

This makes me smile. For many years, I created art which was part of product line sold to Country Magazine, QVC, hundreds of stores, galleries, numerous mail order catalogs, designers etc throughout the world. This product line evolved from Wood Folk Art (remember the Americana revival of the late '70's) to cut and painted folksy tin, to painted furniture and floorcloths.

The floorcloths have been most of my focus for the last 15 years. In fact, I teach Floorcloth painting at the Sharon Art Center in Sharon, NH. and the Fiber Art Center in Amherst, MA.
