Shibori Hand Dyed Skirt

Because I am not a quilter per se, I decided to make a skirt.  Here it is.  Just a simple simplicity pattern using three pieces of my shibori fabric.  Perfect for summer. And, for me, to sew a skirt that fits me is a MAJOR accomplishment.

An art quilt!!!

Here is something new for me.  An Art Quilt!  I put this on my Etsy Shop. It was a lot of fun to do but I prefer to paint or thread paint.  Most of these fabrics are my own dyed or hand painted fabrics.  The best part of making this Art Quilt is that I have lots more small pieces of my fabrics and now I know what to do with them.
This measures 14 x 19".

August 2,3 and 4, 2012 in Harwich, MA, I will be exhibiting and selling my hand dyed fabrics at the Bayberry Quilters of Cape Cod annual Quilt Show.


Fiber Art College is where I am teaching Soy Wax batik on a scarf in September.  The Fiber Art College itself is a treat. Searsport is a lovely location, not far from Belfast, Maine. Check it out!

When I look at this fat quarter, I see trees, leaves and flowers than can be cut from this interesting piece.

Gelatin Plate Printing

In an effort to create art without using dyes, I decided to try gelatin plate printing again.  The first time I did it I found it much too limiting, both in size and process.

But it is a new time. I went to the local grocery store and purchased their last gelatin.  OK - now I will mail order.  I purchased large aluminum disposal cookie pans too.  Made the gelatin plate this morning and tonight I printed some fabric.  See what you think. 

My pieces of fabric are only about 11 x 17 in size.  I started with pastel fabric paints and did three or four prints on each piece of fabric, starting with the lighter colors and building up.  I started using some o-rings and decided they didn't look too well.  I cut some stems from a houseplant and I learned I had to use my hand to apply pressure to get a nice print from it.  I used my old faux finishing tools for some texture but it just didn't light my fire.  But I had letters, cut out from a workshop I took with Susie Monday a year ago. www.susiemonday.com.

Then I was cookin".   This is the piece I like the least. It is too muddy.

But here is another which only had two layers of paint. See the houseplant marks.

And here are couple of the finished ones where I intensified the paints.  Two of these pieces were done on pink textured dyed fabric.  But this one just above was started with white cotton muslin.  The one just below had the pink fabric as a ground.  I used a pastel green over it, then a deeper green and finally a purply green.

I used Pro Chem Textile Paints to do this.  But I really like to mix my colors with a brush and get into the color.  Next time I will use acrylic paint and mix it with Golden GAC900.

Now I know what I will do in the hospital, after my surgery.  I will cut letters, all sizes and shapes out of mylar, for my gelatin and screen printing endeavors. 

Walpole Artisan Earth Day exhibit

Life has a way of many unexpected turns.  In the last two months I have been the "victim" of those turns.
I visited the AQS show in Lancaster, PA trying to sell some handpainted fabrics.  Many of those are now on ETSY:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/Lipman.  I was also at the Rutland, VT quilt show which was lovely.
In between I had a mild heart attack.  Good thing!  It was in Lancaster, PA where the heart specialists are terrific (how does one think my folks live to age 93!).  While looking for the cause of the heart attack, a lung mass was found.  More about that when I know more.

In the midst of all this, doing art is a total block.  But my wonderful art friends at the Walpole Artisan Cooperative (http://www.thewalpoleartisans.blogspot.com) decided to have an earth day exhibit.  It felt soo good to create something without any boundaries.  Do visit the Walpole Artisans across from Burdick's and see the earth day exhibit.

Preparing for my next adventure

What does one do with lots of handpainted fabrics? I need an outlet. And I need an income. Out of work and doing art but really, who will buy the supplies! Supplies cost money!

I was juried into the AQS show in Lancaster, PA next month. Scary thought since I haven't done a show in 6 years! But here I go again. It is like an addiction.

Here are a few of my latest creations. I am tempted to list them on ETSY as a trial run. I had some success there before but right now - NO - I need to stay focused. Create work and sell it in Lancaster!

Lots of little star bursts! I think Quilters will like those. And some larger pieces of various types of Shibori dyeing. Not to mention what I didn't photograph!

Back to the art studio! Tomorrow should be a nice warm day for a walk. Keep painting, Terri!

Heart books

Sometimes I am not doing the right thing! I spent 4 whole days creating 3 little heart accordion booklets - thinking I will sell them at the Walpole Artisans Cooperative. And I will put there to sell but do I really think I can make money on them! Ha! Ha! Oh well, here is a preview of one.

United States Artists Fellows

Yesterday my daughter was awarded a fellowship and grant award from the United States Artists Foundation. It was a gala affair for a fabulous award. I am very proud.

Warm wool scarves

I should be posting all of my lastest work. But it takes time.

At Delectable Mountain in Brattleboro, VT, I found some yummy light weight wool for scarves. The wool is just delightful. The scarves are generous enough to be a shawl. I have done some pole wrapping and other shibori resists. Today, I just did a gradation of color (see the left side).

Fiber Twist in Deerfield, MA

Save the date! Fiber Twist http://www.fibertwise.com is coming on September 17 in the building next to the large Yankee Candle store in Deerfield, MA on Route 5/10. It is an all day event. There is a lot of rug hooking, yarn, fiber art, etc.

Yes, I am exhibiting there. I have been very busy creating some new silk scarves, fat quarters and sewing kits to sell there. My Walpole Artisans buddy is making me a new display, too.

Macdowell Medal Day

Right here in Southern New Hampshire is the Macdowell Colony, an artist residency.
Once a year, they open their grounds and studios to the public for Macdowell Medal Day. This year, the medal was presented to playwright Edward Albee. Even thought it was a little rainy, the visit was worth the trip.

The gardens are well kept by their groundskeeper, Emily. I met Emily recently when we had a little lunch together. She lives in Harrisville. She does a great job!

The studios are also well kept. Each has its own sleeping quarters and a bathroom. Each has 4 white walls, a fireplace, etc. The musicians often have their own piano for their residency. Seeing the art, hearing the music, watching the movies; it was all so special and inspiring.




Here, below is the Colony library. Lots of videos and books in a beautiful stone building. The stone building above is the "Alexander" visual art studio. Each studio was unique.

While I often think I live in God's Country, this type of artistic venue makes New Hampshire very special.

A visit to Pennsylvania

Since I have a new life with 4 day week-ends, not by choice, for sure, I thought I should head south and check in on the elderly folks.

They live in Lancaster, PA. But what to do to have some fun on the way?

Check out Goggleworks in Reading, PA.

Goggleworks is an old factory which made glass lenses and goggles. There are 6 buildings of art. One is a glass hot shop; one is ceramics, one is a theatre of sorts, lots of parking, interesting art a facts in downtown Reading now. Goggleworks is a lovely facility of 60-80 art studios, mostly painters. There is a fine craft gallery, too. What a gem!

The only bad thing today was the heat! My car thermometer said it was 102 o F until I arrived in Lancaster at 1pm. Tonight it is still 90 oF. Enough already.

Yes, there are classes. I plan to inquire about their artists in residence program. What a great use of a government grant. And Reading is now a thriving city!

Many changes happening

We moved, in April, to a new/old house on School St in Keene. The house was built in 1827 and has a historical story, according to the newspaper. The builder owned the Keene Sentinel, the local newspaper.

We are still adapting as lots of work has to be done. The second floor will be my art studio. The second floor is a mess with boxes. Soon after we moved we went abroad on vacation. More about that coming soon.

But living in downtown Keene is terrific. We walk everywhere. Our green footprint is growing. When we lived in Winchester, we put about $80.00 a week into our gas tank. That is one month's budget now! One car will go soon.

The end of a snowy winter

What does one do when it snows and snows and snows? We had a whole years' of snow in two months this year. And this week-end we were blitzed again. The Snow thrower broke! No time to clean up so hire someone and run into the studio.

AHHH...it was a wonderful week-end. I created some baby clothes to sell at the Walpole Artisan Cooperative in Walpole, NH.

And while I was at it, I did two little jackets for Rachel and Maria. Those twins are so cute. Counting the days til I see them in April!

Twined knitting

Although I am doing two art journals, filled with family art memobalia I found the time on Saturday to take a class on Twined knitting. Taught by Beth Reinsel-Brown, one could not ask for more information. We saw photos of the old Swedish knitting and samples Beth brought to us. One interesting piece showed a sweater with the knitted sleeves sewn into an embroidered garment - all done by an expert tailor. It was amazing.

Brattleboro is a lovely town. Think shop small - lots of fun shops, a good bakery, restaurants, the Brattleboro Food Coop.

Artist Cards

Its a new year and time to do some new things. I did just that. I created more than 10 artist cards. They are so carefree and fun. Easy to make, easy to give.

Having a Pfaff embellisher really makes my life a pleasure. I don't know how I lived without it! I know it is hard to see in this textile postcard. However, I put various painted fabrics onto an iron on pellon, then put down some wool with cut up angelina. Over that, I put an odd shape scrap of nylon netting. Under the embellisher it went to keep it in tack. Works like a charm. So easy, quick and fun.

Glimmering Gone

I was very surprised on Friday when I received a package from the Museum of Glass www.museumofglass.org/in Tacoma, Washington.

Glimmering Gone is the latest exhibit that Beth and her friend, Ingalena Klenell have done. It is a fabulous exhibit. The book: Glimmering Gone was in the package.
